In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, 363 political parties (seven national parties, 34 state parties, and 242 registered and unrecognised parties) contested, along with 3,831 independent candidates. Thirty-eight political parties (and nine independents) are currently represented in Lok Sabha. Twelve parties have only one member, seven are represented by two members, another 10 have between three to 10 members in Lok Sabha. Only the Congress and the BJP have more than 5 percent of the seats (27 seats) in the House.
Different state parties were established at different periods because of different reasons. Some even have origins prior to India’s independence.
In Andra Pradesh, also in south India, Telugu Desam was founded in 1982 by Telegu film actor, NT Rama Rao. The ideology of the party is similar to the ideology of the AIADMK, which is local cultural pride. In the Telugu Desam case, the local cultural pride is of Telugu culture.
Another one state party is Akali Dal and its main hold is in Punjab, north India. This party is considered a state party, but actually it is a religion oriented party whose followers are the Sikhs. This party also has its origin prior to India’s independence.
There are other state parties in India. To name a few there are, National Conference in Kashmir, Haryana Vikas Party in Haryana, Manipur People’s Party in Manipur, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak in Goa, Sikkim Democratic Front in Sikkim, Mizo National Front in Mizoram, and many other parties. People who broke away from larger national parties, like the Congress founded some state parties. For example the West Bengal Trinamul Congress, Tamil Manila Congress, Kerala Congress. There are also communist state parties.

As of now, six parties – BJP, BSP, Congress, CPI, CPI (M) and NCP – are recognized as ‘national parties’. Besides, there are 54 ‘recognized state parties’and number of ‘registered, unrecognized’ political parties in India now stand at 1,627.
A large number of political parties are registered at the Election Commission, without having been recognized as National or State parties Political Parties and You may be surprised to know that in 2009, 363 parties contested elections and now in 2014, 1593 parties ready to contesting in 2014 general elections.The announcement of Lok Sabha elections has seen a rush to register as a political party with as many as 34 new outfits registering themselves with the Election Commission in 16 days.The total number of ‘registered, unrecognized’ political parties in India now stand at 1,627.
According to the Election Commission, there were a total of 1,593 such parties in the country till March 10. 24 more such parties were registered between March 11 and March 21. And by March 26 — the last EC count – 10 more outfits had registered as political parties.
These registered but unrecognized political parties do not have the privilege of contesting on their election symbols. They have to choose from a list of ‘free symbols’issued by the poll panel. According to a latest EC circular,87 such free symbols are available.
